Alice in Wonderland
Last year, the College commenced preparations, rehearsals and planning for our recent production, ‘Alice in Wonderland’. The cast and crew thrilled five separate audiences with their entertaining and highly professional interpretation of this favourite musical production. The feedback we have received from people who saw the show has been wonderful and a testament to the many hours of dedication, mostly on weekends and after hours, by all concerned. I congratulate all of our students who were involved and thank our key staff in Mr Matthew Grigsby (Producer), Miss Erin Kelly (Director), Mr Neil Gregson (Assistant Director), Mr James Softly (Musical Director), Mrs Ruth Lamb (Costume Design), Mr Barry Croasdale (Set Design and Construction) and Mrs Barb O’Donovan (Props) for their outstanding efforts. Well done to everyone!
My thanks goes to all staff but especially Mr Joe Italiano, Sports Coordinator, and the Health and Physical Education Learning Area, for organising our Interhouse Athletics Carnival at the end of Week 6. It was a fantastic event, and it was great to see so many of our students competing for their Houses and enjoying the day. Congratulations to all our students who tried their best, regardless of where they finished in any particular event. The most important thing is that you try your best. A special congratulations to our students in Kelly House who were the overall winners for this year. We look forward to seeing how our students go in the upcoming ACC Carnival in Perth.
The College celebrated Book Week recently with this year’s theme being ‘Old Worlds, New Worlds and Other Worlds’. It was fantastic to see so many of our students and staff becoming involved in the various activities organised by the English Learning Area and Library staff. Our Year 7 and Year 12 students looked fantastic in their costumes and the ‘Book Week Parade’ proved to be a huge hit. I am not sure who enjoyed dressing up more, our students or our staff! My thanks goes to our many staff who made an effort to dress up for the occasion. Our students certainly loved it!
Year 9 Fathers’ Day Breakfast
The Year 9 Fathers’ Day Breakfast event was held at the end of Week 7 to acknowledge the contribution of fathers and significant males in the lives of our students. It was fantastic to see so many gentlemen come and enjoy the morning. My thanks goes to Mr Kerry Pile, Director of Students – Year 9, who was supported by Ms Jacky Patience, and our Parents’ and Friends’ Association for coordinating the event. Thank you also to our many students and staff who came in early to set up and prepare breakfast.
Randolph Stow Awards
Winners for this year’s Randolph Stow Young Writers Awards were announced at a ceremony held at Geraldton Christian College. This is an annual competition held by the City of Greater Geraldton Regional Library for all schools in the Mid West to demonstrate their prose and poetry writing skills. This year the Library received a record number of more than 800 entries from across the Mid West region. I take this opportunity to acknowledge the work of Ms Kirsty Sinclair, Head of Learning Area – English, Mrs Sarah Clune, Library Manager, and our English staff. Nagle Catholic College students won 23 of the categories they were eligible to enter, including one of our Year 12 students who received the prestigious ‘Pat Callaghan Award’. This is a significant achievement by our students and a wonderful testament to the hard work and commitment of our staff. Well done to all our students who submitted entries to the competition and especially those who had their work recognised by the judges.
Mingenew and Chapman Valley Expos
The College recently had stalls at both the Mingenew and Chapman Valley Expos. It was wonderful to have some many existing families come over to say hello and a great opportunity to chat with prospective students and their parents. The College had an interactive stall which engaged many people as they passed by. This included a 3D printer in action and remote controlled cars that people could operate via an iPad. My thanks to Mr Oliver Murray, Head of Learning Area – Technologies, Mr Corey Smith, one of our Technologies teachers, and Ms Kelly Killen, Communications and Enrolment Officer, who managed our stalls at the expos and organised the activities.
Geraldton Residential College Presentation and Graduation Day
I recently attended the GRC Presentation and Graduation Ceremony. It was fantastic to see so many Nagle Catholic College students receive awards in recognise of their contribution and efforts as boarders at the College. The GRC offers many activities, sporting options and events for the students to actively engage and enhance their boarding experience whilst they are living away from home. The vast majority of students enjoy their experience as boarders and the opportunity it provides. My congratulations to all the students who received awards and graduated from the GRC. My thanks also to Ruth Davies, the GRC Manager and all the staff who work there for their dedication and support of our students in making the College a ‘home away from home’.
Year 12 Farewell
Our Year 12 students celebrate their final days of formal schooling this week. Their final Assembly was a great celebration and conclusion to their time at the College. It is important to stop and reflect on their achievement of finishing their secondary education. The College has valued the contribution that they have made as leaders. We thank them for their efforts and for further developing and nurturing the important sense of school spirit which we value so deeply. Our Year 12 students exited the College through a guard of honour. The front gates are then ceremoniously closed signifying that when one door closes, another door opens. We are proud of each and every one of our Year 12 students and we wish them every blessing and happiness as they begin the next chapter of their lives.
I would like to wish all a relaxing two week break. We look forward to the commencement of Term 4 for all students on Tuesday 12 October. Please note our College Reception will re-open on Friday 8 October 9.00am until 3.00pm.
Mr Michael Williams
